Class TDM was created by Wheatttt, as a part of her map [https://gamebanana.com/mods/665406 Crush] for April Fools, 2024. The gamemode was dubbed ''Civilian Deathmatch''.
As part of her April Fools, 2024 map [https://gamebanana.com/mods/665406 Crush], Wheatttt created a version of Team Deathmatch that restricted teams to Civilian, which she dubbed ''Civilian Deathmatch''. Using the now-removed {{code|tf_player_equip}} entity, she made pickups that could give players specific weapons with almost no restrictions, and placed them throughout the map. Notably, a [[Rocket Launcher]] pickup is occasionally made accessible in the centre building, which temporarily boosts anyone who grabs it with [[Critical hits|Crits]] and [[ÜberCharge]].

Inspired by Crush, Moonrider later released his own CivDM map [https://gamebanana.com/mods/662374 Rift] on what is presumed to be April Fools Day, 2025. It plays similarly to Crush, with weapon pickups scattered throughout the map and one powerful pickup - this time a boosted [[R.P.G.]] - made available at certain times in the centre. Rift does however feature a more vertical layout than Crush, with jump pads and staircases allowing players to traverse the map quickly.

Moonrider would later go on to make his own CivDM map, [https://gamebanana.com/mods/662374 Rift], inspired by Crush a year later. The exact date of the initial release of Rift is unknown as Moonrider deleted earlier revisions on GameBanana, but it's believed to be April Fool's Day, 2025.

Initially unaware of CivDM, mapper Static Fanatic released [https://gamebanana.com/mods/599995 Dead End] on June 11, 2025. This map was the first CivDM map to not use a ''Team Deathmatch'' ruleset, instead using a ''Capture the Flag'' format dubbed ''Civilian CTF'' that used a custom weapons pack instead of weapon pickups. He would later create [https://gamebanana.com/mods/617044 Sled End], a Team Deathmatch conversion of the map before ultimately converting it to an all-class CTF map.
