The Mercenary was a special class for the now-defunct Deathmatch game mode, where you fight other players in a free-for-all, with each player usually being customized with their own colors to differentiate each other.
He was the only class to be able to pick up and use various weapons at the same time, ranging from the Rocket Launcher to the Flame Thrower, which can give a slight advantage if in the right fight.
The Mercenary, alongside the Deathmatch game mode, have been split off from Team Fortress 2 Classic to be it's own standalone game titled Team Deathmatch Classic, Team Deathmatch Classic is currently in private development, being developed by Compucolor Pictures and has shown zero public information as of Early 2023.
The Mercenary was voiced by Jonathan "Stachekip" Biondi.

Trivia
- The Mercenary was given the unofficial nickname "Jason Grant", TF2 Classic developers have debunked that "Jason Grant" is not the name of the Mercenary, but rather the name of a Steam Forums user who was ranting about a server.
- Stachekip also recorded himself reading the rant in Mercenary's voice, and the voiceclip being incorporated into a SFM animation, this is what's likely making people assume the Mercenary's name is "Jason Grant".
